I love yoga and meditation! There was a time when I was engulfed in negativity…my life felt like it was falling apart daily. I stumbled upon the book The Secret and it began an amazing life changing journey for me. I looked into each quote in the book and began reading several quotes from Buddha and it led me to look into Buddhist philosophies and I have been led down several different roads and gathered so much knowledge from so many wonderful souls. Using yoga and meditation to center my life and keep me in my happy place has changed my life for the better. I am happier, healthier, and calmer- and much more pleasant to be around, I’m sure…
When I adopted Madelyn- I instantly began finding ways to incorporate yoga and meditation into her life as well. I think it helps her calm down, it helps her shut her brain off and relax, and it helps her keep a healthy, happy energy.
Meditation for kids
Madelyn loves to listen to soothing music to meditate. Her favorite album is Meditation for Kids by Sada. She has a very soothing voice and has beautiful guided meditation stories that are easy for Madelyn to follow and really do the trick. If she’s cranky, she often falls asleep as she listens.
I have also come across this link to make your own meditation jar or bottle, like these from My Crazy Blessed Life.
They are made with glitter glue and water…can’t wait to make one. The idea is to shake the bottle and then have the child watch the glitter fall to the bottom of the bottle to calm down. I kind of want one for myself:)
We also do candle meditation. Madelyn picks a candle that she likes the scent of, then we out down a pillow and she sits or lays on the pillow and just watches the candle flame as I play soft music. This is one of my favorites…
Yoga for kids
Madelyn loves to do yoga! It helps her concentrate, it teaches her how to be still and develops her strength. And it’s fun!
I always start with breathing. I tell Madelyn to breath in like she’s smelling the most beautiful flowers, then blow out like she’s blowing bubbles. This seems to be an easy concept for her and slows her down as well as gets her concentrating on the breath.
We love this video from Namaste Yoga. Her breathing techniques are a little different from mine, but have the same idea.
There is also a wonderful video from Cosmic Kids! It is a little better suited for kiddos in a more wiggly mood or littler ones.
There are so many ideas, videos, and pictures out there. Find what works for you and don’t forget to participate right along side your kids! It may open up a world of positivity for you, too!
