I first came across the Orange Rhino Challenge on a friend’s Facebook page. It is a blog written by a mother of 4 boys about her pledge to improve her sanity and bring calm into her life and her kid’s lives by pledging not to yell for an entire year.
I’m always game for trying new things, especially anything that will bring me calm and peace. So, my little family and I took the pledge to not yell for an entire week – and we made it! Of, course we didn’t make it much longer than that.
I think that this idea is great because I think we jump to yelling a bit too quickly. I also believe that kid’s can shut down very quickly when you yell and not retain much of what you are saying. However, in my experience, I think that a quick firm yell is sometimes needed to get the kiddo’s attention and to make sure they know you mean business. Maybe it’s just my kid…
The orange rhino blog has inspired me to look at not only the reason behind my yell, but it’s effect on the situation. It has truly changed my way of parenting and brought more peace to my heart.
Read her blog, it’s full of fun stories from the writer and other moms that share in our constant struggle to remain calm and keep our kid’s in line. She has cleaver suggestions for alternatives to yelling and great ideas for reconnecting with your lovely offspring.
What do you think about this idea?
Have you ever tried something like this?
