Madelyn’s birthday is fast approaching…she’s having a pirate party and informed me that she would need a red and black tutu. I recently saw a tutu in a craft store that I couldn’t believe had a price tag of $19.99! Does anyone really pay that for a tutu? I looked closely at the tutu and saw that it was literally tulle fabric cut in strips and tied in knots around elastic…really? I can do that!
Here’s what I did…
I bought some black elastic from Jo-Ann’s. I used 1 inch, but next time I will choose 1/2 inch – the 1 inch size ended up folding in half when I tied the knots, so 1/2 inch will do!
I cut pieces of tulle – 22″ by 9″. I used around 40 pieces.
I folded the piece of tulle in half and made a loop on the outside of the elastic band – after experimenting with some different ways – this one made the tulle lay the best.
Thread the ends of the tulle through the loop and pull tight. Keep doing this until the waistband is full!
That’s all! A beautiful custom tutu in less than an hour! Yay!
Here’s one of Madelyn showing it off…
Goes well with the outfit, huh? Oh, this kid and her fashion sense…
Have a happy-crafty day!
